The Greatest Hurt

Lynne Jones – September 2024

The greatest hurt

The greatest hurt
The greatest shame
The cavernous void
The unending pain
No resolution, no end
Isolate from all my friends
Gasping breathless
As Darkness descends
And in that moment
You were gone
I couldn’t own it
what I had done
Why couldn’t I see
You had your own dreams
Why couldn’t I see
You were separate from me
Across the years I have learnt
You were my greatest joy and my greatest hurt

Reflexivity

  1. What do you think is happening here?
  1. Who are the players in this story?
  1. What could the other person’s story be?
  1. Did this resonate with your experience?  If so, how?
  1. Write your own story.  How might your experiences help you to connect with a client experiencing isolation, rejection, estrangement or marginalisation.
  1. What might this client need from a therapist?
  1. What approaches or modalities might be helpful?  What images or pictures, or colours are evoked in this poem?
