They didn’t make it

Lynne Jones – July 2025

This poem explores feelings about a relationship in distress.

I knew Marriage could be hard but the test came way too soon
Feels like we were barely home and unpacked from the honeymoon
It’s hard to keep from feeling our wedding was a sham
Hearing the truth, You invited me to feel like a lesser man.

I cant begin to comprehend the anger that I feel
I’m shocked and mad and crazy and can’t believe that it is real
If you’d only stopped to remember what you got marrying me
Kindness forever, and love unconditionally.
Said we’d be together till Death tears us apart
Like a shambling mindless zombie you ripped out my heart
My superhuman strength to stay, care and keep you in my life
Brought you back to consciousness without the qualities of a wife

They say Marriage is hard. Don’t I fucking know it
If you want me to be a husband to you you’d better fucking show it
To recover we need Communication and a clear thought out plan
Meet me half way and I’ll show you I’m the bigger man.
